Where would it be?

In general terms, there are two possible routes for the proposed ICC.

One route, now being called Corridor 1, would be largely the same as the Master Plan Alignment studied in 1997. This route would begin at   I-370/I-270 near Shady Grove, cut in an east-southeast direction to Georgia Avenue north of Norbeck Rd, run through Longmead Crossing, and continue on to I-95 and US Route 1 south of Laurel.

The other route, now being called Corridor 2, would be in the same general location as the Mid-County Highway/Route 198 Alternative studied in 1997. This route would diverge from Corridor 1 at Georgia Avenue, where it would head east alongside Route 198, through Burtonsville, and then south alongside Old Gunpowder Road, to intersect I-95 at the same point as Corridor 1.

Clearly, Corridor 1 would significantly change the character of Longmead Crossing. According to the 1997 plan, the highway would follow this route:

  • between Clear Shot Drive and Wintergate Drive (across the street from townhouses on Wintergate)
  • continuing south of Park Vista Drive
  • directly behind townhouses on Callohan Court
  • behind the athletic field
  • directly behind townhouses on Dinsdale Drive and Shamrock Ridge Road
  • intersecting with Layhill Road south of Park Vista Drive

For a detailed look at the current Corridor 1 Route through Longmead Crossing, see this map.

For the 1997 Master Plan Route, see this map.

If this highway is allowed to run through our community, the consequences would include increased air and noise pollution, destruction of habitat for animal and plant life, and an overall decrease in the quality of life for Longmead residents.

The same is true of the other alignment. In some cases, residences in the way of the ICC would need to be demolished; in other areas, residents would have the highway running very close to their backyards. At Longmead United Against the ICC, we are opposed to both proposed alignments, because both are environmental disasters--and neither would solve the traffic problem.
